From 3–15 December 2012, the course “Lebanese for Lebanon: when cultural heritage aims for peace” brought together a group of professionals committed to making a difference in protecting the valuable and rich cultural heritage of their country.
This initiative, supported by the Cultural Emergency Response Program (CER) of the Prince Claus Fund, is a follow-up activity of the ICCROM International Courses on First Aid to Cultural Heritage in Times of Conflict.
Fourteen professionals with various backgrounds and experience (archaeologists, architects, restorers, army professionals and volunteers from the Lebanese Red Cross) joined together for a course that aimed at providing knowledge of the methodologies and skills necessary to ensure damage assessment and first aid measures to cultural heritage in emergencies, and also for successful team-building.
The concept of cultural heritage, the legal framework of the Hague Convention, the well-organized response of the army, civil defence and the Red Cross were among the topics that participants had the chance to discuss and learn from. Risk assessment and evaluation, conflict analysis, negotiation and mediation, together with strategies for rescuing different types of cultural heritage (both movable and immovable) comprised the training process, as did the many practical exercises.
During the closing ceremony of the course, H.E. the Lebanese Minister of Culture, Mr Gaby Layoun, awarded the participants with a certificate. He also expressed his gratitude to the partners involved in the course implementation and to the participants by stating that the creation of this team constitutes a great step towards the joint commitment of protecting Lebanese cultural heritage.
Partners include: the Prince Claus Fund, Biladi, the Lebanese Army and the Lebanese Red Cross.
