Sevilley has recently approved the construction plans for a controversial tower design that was developed by Cesar Pelli – the famous Argentine architect
With blueprints ready for a 600ft tall skyscraper, experts have warned that the Spanish city of Seville is going to be in danger of losing its Unesco World Heritage status. The city has recently approved the construction plans for a controversial tower design that was developed by Cesar Pelli – the famous Argentine architect. Apparently, the UN culture chief thinks that the new tower’s construction will have a negative effect on Seville’s historic center.
In 1987, Seville secured a place on the World Heritage list for being homage to Alcazar – the Moorish fort, the Cathedral and Archivo De Indias, the renowned monumental complex that dates back to the 13th century.
The vast Cathedral holds the tomb of Christopher Columbus, whereas the complex includes the Giralda minaret; a 320ft tower that was once considered as the tallest tower in the world. However, the skyline is now threatened by the construction of the new tower which is going to serve as the Headquarters for savings bank: Cajasol. Construction workers have already started work on the site and “hopefully” everything will be in order by the end of 2011.
The UN chief has already protested against the development of the 600ft tall skyscraper and in collaboration with Fernandez Salinas – the UNESCO advisor in Spain, a proposal for the modification of the new tower has been suggested. Seville could be removed from the list of World Heritage Sites. As a result the city will lose its prized status that was being maintained since 1972.
