The Manchar police have booked some unidentified persons for allegedly trying to steal an antique 4-ft idol of Lord Vishnu from a temple in Kathapur, near Manchar. The incident took place during the wee hours of Tuesday.
The incident came to light around 7.30 am on Tuesday when the priest, Vilas Sonar, came to the temple for performing a 'puja'. He found the door of the temple open and the idol lying on the floor in a broken state. Sonar immediately alerted the villagers.
The Manchar police rushed to the temple on being alerted. Investigating officer P N Satkar said the Vishnu temple was one of the oldest temples in Kathapur. The idol, which was made of marble, weighed around 100 kg and was an antique piece.
